At Twin Cities Modern Dentistry, we use the most innovative techniques and modern equipment available to provide the best dental care we possibly can. As part of our commitment to helping you achieve stellar oral health, we provide beautiful onlays and inlays for our patients in the Minneapolis area. These restorations are a conservative alternative to dental crowns, and blend seamlessly with your teeth while protecting against further damage. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Mike Henrickson or Dr. Sheryl Tandon, contact our practice today.
When you have a sizable cavity, we need to repair and protect the tooth in order to prevent further damage. Untreated decay can cause deep cavities, which often require a root canal or extraction.
Inlays and onlays are an ideal solution for damage that is not severe enough to require a dental crown, but too large for a simple filling to adequately address. The main difference between the two is the location where the restoration is applied.
In the case of inlays, the restoration is placed between the cusps (the rounded edges) of the tooth, whereas onlays are more substantial, and replace one or more cusps of the tooth. We offer resin and porcelain inlays and onlays, and prefer these materials because they are more compatible with your natural teeth than silver amalgam or gold. And because they are made of tooth-colored materials, they are virtually invisible to anyone but your dentist.
To determine your candidacy for an inlay or onlay, we will examine your teeth closely and take any necessary X-rays in order to assess the health of the tooth. Next, we will carefully clean and prep the area using an advanced laser system to gently remove the damaged tooth material. Laser dentistry offers a number of benefits, including minimized discomfort and enhanced healing.
If you are receiving a porcelain restoration, a high-resolution, digital camera will take detailed pictures of the treatment area so that specialized software can create a virtual 3D model. We use the CEREC® system, a sophisticated CAM/CAD program, to mill the porcelain restoration, meaning your inlay or onlay can be placed in just one visit. This process is much more efficient and precise than the traditional creation of inlays and onlays, which required a physical mold that was sent to an off-site dental laboratory.
Your customized restoration will be precisely sculpted to fit naturally within your bite. Milled porcelain is extremely durable, and can be tinted to blend naturally with your surrounding teeth.
We can improve your oral health using a variety of methods. In addition to inlays and onlays, we offer a comprehensive range of restorative dentistry services, including dental implants and dental crowns.
