It is a sad fact that many people fear the dentist so much that they let their dental health go to the point where a good deal of harm is done. Then, of course, they have no choice but to visit the dentist, and they frequently require many expensive treatments. Often the problem is not so much a fear of the dentist as such, but fear of pain. With modern dental treatments, pain can be reduced or even eliminated.
For most people, the worst part of dental treatment is the anesthetic injection, but today, a topical anesthetic is applied before the dentist inserts the needle, so usually the worst you will feel is a little pinching sensation. In addition, laser technology has advanced to the point that many treatments can be carried out without using a needle at all. If, even knowing all that, the thought of seeing the dentist still terrifies you, you may quite simply be dental-phobic. If that is the case, there are things that we can do to relax you so that you can get through your treatment without anxiety.
There is little point in telling you that there is nothing to fear – your brain knows that, but your shaking knees and clammy hands are telling you something else entirely. If this sounds like you, you might want to consider sedation dentistry. You have probably heard of it, but you may have some misconceptions. Perhaps you are under the impression that it means you will be put to sleep while you have your treatment, and you do not find that idea overly pleasing either. The fact is, with sedation dentistry, you can stay awake throughout the entire process. It is called “conscious sedation.”
You have likely heard of nitrous oxide, which is also referred to as “laughing gas.” That is actually a misnomer because you can be assured that you are not going to laugh, or even giggle. You will just be very relaxed, but you will be alert. You’ll be aware of what is going on, but you won’t be distressed by it.
Another type of conscious sedation is oral sedation. This is simply a pill that will relax you, and it is very useful for people who are afraid of the needle. The sedation will relax you to the extent that you will no longer be afraid.
With conscious sedation, the dentist will be able to perform needed treatments for longer periods, so you won’t have to make as many visits to have your dental issues corrected. Also, since the sedation will remain in your system for quite a while after your dental treatments, the likelihood of pain following your treatments is reduced. Following sedation, you may even forget what happened while you were in the dentist’s chair. The only down side to conscious sedation is that you won’t be able to drive yourself home after the treatment, so bring a friend or family member with you, or plan to take a taxi.
